The answer is usually a couple of weeks, according to the Australian Steak Association.

How long you can make a beef steak depends on the thickness of the meat, how many cuts you take, and the amount of marinade you use.

“It depends on how thin the steak is,” Dr Tomás said.

“If it’s a little bit thick, like a lamb or a chuck steak, you can do it for a couple weeks, but if you’re like a medium-thin steak, like an 80 per cent beef steak, it’ll take three weeks.”

Beef is a major source of protein for humans, while veal is considered a more healthy choice for vegetarians.

Dr Tomas said you could get up to six weeks’ worth of steak for around $60, while beef could be cooked for up to three weeks for around half the price.

“A lot of beef is sold in the supermarket for less than $15 a kilogram.

That’s a lot cheaper than the steak,” he said, adding beef was also considered healthier than veal.

“You’re going to get the same quality meat that the animal produced and it’s going to have more flavour, but you’re not going to be as expensive.”

Meat from animals that are raised in small cages has been around for hundreds of years, he added.

Dr Thomas said the meat from a beef cow, which was raised in a factory, would have less flavour and a lot more fat, and was usually sold in large quantities.

“So, a lot of the flavour and flavour is gone and the meat is basically a bit of dry fat,” he explained.

“There are no enzymes in it so it’s not very tender.”

Beef, lamb and veals, or cattle, were all meat-based until the 19th century, and were not affected by the introduction of antibiotics, Dr Thomas added.

The Australian Beef Association said its members were keen to help people make the right choices for their own health.

“Many of the beef and lamb we buy are raised by dairy farmers and the cattle are fed antibiotics, so we want people to be aware of the possible health effects that this might have on them,” Dr Thomas told the ABC.

“They should talk to their veterinarian before deciding to buy their own beef.”

Meat can be eaten raw or cooked and many veal products are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish and eggs.

But Dr Thomas advised consumers to limit their intake of red meat to a minimum of one per week.

“Red meat is one of the most unhealthy foods you can eat,” he told ABC Radio Melbourne.

“I’m not going into it as a health issue, I’m going into that as a consumer choice.”

You can find some really good, quality meat in the supermarkets but don’t be afraid to look for cheaper options.
