AUSTIN, Texas — The United States is on track to consume a record-high 3.3 billion pounds of meat and poultry this year, according to the latest estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In a recent poll, 47 percent of Americans said they thought Americans would spend more on meat and seafood this year than they did last year, with a similar share saying they’d spend less than $10.

has the third highest consumption of meats and poultry in the world, behind China and Japan.
The highest consumption has been in China, with an average of 3.1 pounds per person per year, and Japan with 2.9 pounds per capita per year.
The numbers for meat and meat products have also been rising.
In 2017, the U of A and the University of Wisconsin reported that Americans ate an average 6.3 pounds of meats per person, and the UVA and Johns Hopkins University reported that meat consumption has increased by more than 15 percent since 2015.
Experts on food and meat consumption have said the current trend toward a higher-than-average meat and dairy consumption is the result of a combination of factors, including a decline in the availability of cheap, high-quality meat.
The USDA data shows there were 4.6 billion pounds spent on U. S. meat in 2017, up from 4.3 in 2016.
That includes more than $5 billion spent on beef, pork, and lamb, according a new analysis by the UofA and Johns Johns Hopkins universities.
While the increase in meat consumption may not sound like much, experts say the trend could have far-reaching implications for people’s health and the environment.
“If you eat less meat, it’s going to have a direct impact on the environment,” said Dr. Richard L. Haines, a professor of veterinary medicine and microbiology at the U-M School of Veterinary Medicine.
“It’s not just that we’re consuming more meat, but the fact that we consume less meat in general.”
Livestock consumption in the U;s diet may have been in decline for decades, but Hain, who has studied the health effects of meat, says it could be a contributing factor in the current obesity epidemic.
“It’s the way people eat, the way they eat their food, the food they eat in general that’s a major contributor to this,” he said.
While Americans have eaten more than 5 billion pounds (2.9 billion kilograms) of meat in the last 25 years, the country’s average American consumes an average 3.2 pounds per year on average, according the USDA.
In 2016, meat consumption increased in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., from an average 2.4 pounds per American per year to 3.7 pounds per annual American.
However, the USDA data showed that the number of Americans who ate meat has decreased in the past 25 years.
In 2016, 41 percent of adults in the United States consumed more than three pounds of poultry per person.

However the trend has slowed in recent years, and experts say people are more likely to eat less than they once did.
In 2015, the percentage of Americans that ate fewer than 10 servings of meat each day dropped to 17 percent, down from 26 percent in 2016, according data from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.
That percentage dropped to 18 percent in 2017.
In 2017, fewer than 2 in 10 Americans said their meals consisted of meat at least once per week.
In 2015, it was close to 1 in 10.
The number of meat-eating Americans has been on the rise for several years.
A new Pew Research survey released in 2017 found that between 2006 and 2015, Americans ate more meat per person than at any point since records began.
In that same period, the proportion of Americans eating meat more than once a week jumped from 19 percent to 28 percent.
While meat consumption in general has decreased over the past few years, experts have said that Americans are eating more meat in part due to the high-fat and processed foods that are widely available and easy to eat.
Food and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said in a statement that the USDA and other agencies are “working to reduce meat consumption by all Americans, including those who have limited access to nutritious foods.”
Perdue also said that the department has been working to make the country healthier by introducing a wide range of foods, including fruits and vegetables, that are more nutrient-dense.
