New research shows that white meat chicken is more healthy than red meat and is a better source of vitamins than beef, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture said on Thursday.
“We believe that if the public and government focus on the health benefits of white meat poultry, then it will ultimately result in healthier diets,” said Agriculture Commissioner John S. Dorman in a statement.
The South Carolina report comes on the heels of a recent poll conducted by a public relations firm for a South Carolina-based poultry company.
The poll showed that 77 percent of respondents in the survey believed red meat is healthier than white meat.
The USDA has previously studied the health effects of white meats on the environment and humans.
According to the USDA, white meats, such as beef, pork, lamb and pork, contain about 95 percent less nitrogen than other meats.
